The process to schedule an appointment was a bit slow, both online and by phone. However, once I was able to book my appointment to renew my passport and Mexican consular ID (Matrícula Consular), I realized I needed to provide some additional documents, such as my marriage certificate and a utility bill. Fortunately, the staff member offered me the option to go back home to get the missing documents, which was very convenient. Also, I was glad that when I returned, they only asked me for my birth certificate and the expired consular ID; I didn’t need the marriage certificate or the utility bill. I ended up making an extra trip home for no reason, but at least the process was faster than expected. I also want to mention that the facilities were very clean and the bathrooms were well maintained.

Although it seemed unfair to me that they charge for scheduling an appointment and I noticed they only asked me for the minimum documents, it was unpleasant that later they asked me for other documents without prior notice. It was unpleasant for me to witness people standing in line on the street, waiting for permission to enter what you call the representation of Mexico, in order to obtain a necessary document. I was surprised to see that there were security staff at the door who turned people away and wouldn’t let them talk to anyone; they simply sent them back without any real ability to make decisions. Also, inside the consulate I saw employees or officials talking about their personal lives and making money at the expense of Mexicans. I also thought the cost of $180 for a notarized paper was unfair and the limited hours for taking calls. Because of all these reasons, I decided to renounce my Mexican nationality and avoid problems at a U.S. consulate over a passport. It’s unfortunate to see how our government offices make good money but are mediocre in their performance. I ask Mr. President to do something for his people on this side of the country, since the consulate and its foundation are also part of Mexico. In addition, I want to point out that the consulate was completely empty, with six windows unoccupied, even though the COVID-19 pandemic is already over. I also continue to observe social distancing inside the consulate, as if each service window were a political party.
